Red flags to watch for

  • A price far below similar properties in the area.
  • Pressure to pay before you can check.
  • The agent will not let you view the property, or asks for payment before a viewing.
  • Requests to pay into a personal account, or to pay in cash with no receipt.
  • Stock photos or images reused across different locations.
  • An owner who is "abroad" and can only communicate by message.

Before you pay

  • View the property in person, or send a verified tour agent.
  • Confirm their identity and authority to rent or sell.
  • Get a verification report from Oikus.
  • Get everything in writing, and keep receipts and chat records.

When you view a property

  • Tell someone where you are going and bring a friend if you can.
  • Meet in daylight where possible.
  • Do not carry large amounts of cash.

Protect your information

Never share OTPs, passwords or banking PINs. Oikus will never ask for them.
